The eight Pathway Demos are obviously where this set starts to get interesting. That said, I'll admit that it's hard to get too excited about them at this point, but I know I'd complain if they weren't included. The four outtakes are all carried over from the Rhino CD as well, and are indispensible in a set like this. Some people swear that nothing compares to the original vinyl, but barring a remix from the multis, I don't imagine anyone is going to get the current master tape to sound any better than this. Universal was probably smart to (apparently) reuse the same mastering as the Rhino set, as it sounded as good as I've ever heard MAIT sound on CD. Not too much to say about the presentation of the original album. Rather than just repeating the Rhino set and packing on further rarities, I respect the fact that Universal decided to instead start from scratch. I really respect the conceptual integrity to the set, how all the material seems to have a strong and compelling relationship to the original album, and can serve to deepen the listeners appreciation for it. Congratulations to Bill Levenson and everyone else involved with it. I've had a few days to absorb this now, and I've got one word to describe the set: SPECTACULAR.
